A pest doctor?

British surgeon who performed 450 unnecessary operations set an anti-record

"Health of Ukraine"In the UK, one of the largest scandals related to medicine in recent decades is flaring up.

The surgeon of one of the counties performed at least 450 operations on the mammary glands of patients who did not need such intervention at all.

British oncologist Ian Paterson is accused of convincing at least 450 of his patients to undergo partial mastectomy surgery, although they did not have malignant tumors. But even more dangerous is that to the other 700 patients who really had breast cancer, he performed operations poorly, leaving those parts of the breast that must necessarily be removed with such a diagnosis.

In the latter case, the doctor justified the incomplete excision of the tissues of the glands affected by cancer by the fact that he wanted to preserve part of his patients' breasts "for reasons of cosmetic attractiveness," but such a method of performing operations is prohibited in the United Kingdom. As a result of incomplete excision of breast tissue, several patients had a relapse of the disease.

In those cases when Paterson operated on patients who did not have malignant tumors, he also prescribed them powerful chemotherapy drugs with serious side effects.

The scandal began with the complaint of an elderly patient who, when examined by another doctor, suddenly found out that she was constantly at risk of cancer returning – the doctor discovered an obvious "marriage" in the work of an unscrupulous colleague-surgeon.

More than 100 victims of the "hack surgeon" have already filed a lawsuit demanding monetary compensation.

The police also joined the official medical investigation – Ian Paterson reported false information to insurance companies about the degree of complexity of the operations he performed, and in some cases included in the reports and deliberately false information about operations that he had never performed.

It turned out that over the past 15 years, Ian Paterson has changed 5 clinics without staying anywhere for a long time. Now he faces not only expulsion from the profession, but also imprisonment.
