Embryonic stem cells: there is a higher court...

The US Department of Justice challenged the ban on funding stem cell researchCopper news based on AP materials: U.S. appeals order blocking stem cell research
The Obama administration has challenged a ban on government funding for embryonic stem cell research imposed in late August by federal judge Royce Lambert.

On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice officially asked Lambert to reverse this decision.

The Federal District Court of the District of Columbia has declared illegal state support for embryonic stem cell research following a lawsuit filed by several religious organizations, as well as two scientists engaged in the development of cell technologies that do not contradict religious norms. According to Judge Lambert, the expanded funding of stem cell research by the state contradicts American law, which prohibits spending taxpayers' money on experiments involving the destruction of human embryos.

As indicated in the petition of the US Department of Justice, the termination of experiments with stem cells will cause irreparable harm to millions of seriously ill people, whose last hope remains the introduction of new cellular technologies into medicine. In addition, the court's decision, according to the Ministry of Justice, will cause tangible harm not only to the scientific community, but also to American taxpayers, whose money was invested in scientific research that was in jeopardy.

The deadline for Judge Lambert's response to the request of the Ministry of Justice is currently undetermined. However, if the judge refuses to reverse his decision, the US administration will challenge it in the Washington Court of Appeals.

Commenting on the situation around the ban on research funding, White House Press Secretary Reid Cherlin stressed that protecting the interests of the scientific community is one of the priorities of the Obama administration. "We will do everything possible to prevent the potentially catastrophic consequences of this intervention," Cherlin said.
