Kidneys are expensive now

Which of your organs can you sell and how much?

Which Organs Can I Live Without, And How Much Cash Can I Get For Them?Bjorn Carey, Popular Science

Translation: InoSMITo begin with, a legal reference: it is prohibited to sell your organs in the USA.

Besides, it's very dangerous. Allowing an organ to be cut off is quite risky, even if it will be done in the best clinic, and it is much riskier if you do it for money in some dubious place. No, actually, don't do that. Agreed? Well, all right.

There are many organs that a person can theoretically do without, or for which a duplicate system is provided in the body. Most people can do without a kidney, a lung, part of the liver, part of the intestine and an eyeball – and still live a long life.

Now the dealers running the black market of human organs do not bother to pay taxes, but based on rumors about the transactions and on the data provided by the World Health Organization, we can tell you some prices. In India, about 20 thousand dollars will be given for a kidney. In China, buyers will pay 40 thousand dollars and even more. And a good healthy kidney from Israel costs 150 thousand dollars.

However, do not expect that all this money will go to you. "The person who gives the organ receives only a fraction of the amount," says Sally Satel, a member of the research center at the American Institute of Entrepreneurship, which studies prices when making legal and illegal transactions for the sale of donor organs. After an organ dealer – a person who is preparing a kidney purchase and sale transaction - receives his share, he will have to pay for transportation costs, surgeon services, medicines and medical supplies, as well as cover some "organizational expenses" – kickbacks and bribes. Most people get from 1 to 10 thousand dollars for their kidney (and this is most likely much less than the amount you expected).

The best option is to wait until receiving compensation for the provision of organs is legalized in the United States (the Law banning the Sale of Organs from 2009 provided for payments to donors, but its adoption has stalled at the Congressional level), since there is undoubtedly a demand for donor kidneys. Last summer, one person offered his kidney for $ 100,000 (plus medical expenses) on Craigslist (a popular electronic advertising site – approx. transl.), received several applications, but then the site administration removed his ad. And you will most likely be able to request even more. In 1999, before the eBay administration removed the announcement of the kidney put up for auction, bidders managed to raise the price to 7.5 million dollars.
