Brain cancer vaccine gave patients six months of life

Scientists have presented promising results of clinical trials. The vaccine has been developed for more than 20 years and now finally demonstrates its therapeutic effect.

Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University presented the results of the first phase of clinical trials that prove the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma. With this type of brain tumor, the survival prognosis is 11-15 months. The therapy slowed tumor growth and prolonged survival for months, according to a press release from the University of New Glioblastoma Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Phase Ib Clinical Trial.

The study involved 33 patients who were treated with a new vaccine called IGV-001. A control group of 35 people underwent standard treatment at the same hospital.

The vaccine is created from the patient's own malignant cells, which are taken during surgical removal of the tumor, the authors explain. They are treated with oligodeoxynucleotide AS-ODN. It acts against the IGF-R1 receptor, which controls the growth of a focal tumor and metastasis. Then the drug is implanted into the patient under the skin in the abdominal area.

Experimental treatment included two dosages of the vaccine. The participants were then followed for an average of 13 months. For some — up to 39 months.

Overall survival in patients with the maximum dose of the vaccine was 21.9 months compared with 14.6 in the control group.

Survival without progression of tumor growth was 10.4 months versus 5.4 with standard therapy. These are the two most important criteria, the authors emphasize.

No side effects were found. At the end of the year, the second phase of clinical trials will start to confirm the results.

For another fast—killing cancer, pancreatic tumors, important results have also been achieved recently. A combination of drugs, one of which is approved for the treatment of humans, reduces tumor growth and increases survival.
