Against most types of cancer

A way has been found to stop the growth of most cancerous tumors

The MYC oncogene, which stimulates tumor growth in most cancers, has long been the object of intensive research. This is an integral part of the mechanism of development of many types of cancer, and it was not possible to limit its activity for a long time. Scientists hope that blocking its work will be an effective way to fight cancer. However, it was not so easy to identify a connection capable of suppressing the work of MYC.

A breakthrough in this direction was made by researchers from Purdue University. They found that compounds known as indenoisoquinolines inhibit MYC overexpression by acting on the oncogene promoter – the region from which its reading begins.

Article by Wang et al. Indenoisoquinoline Topoisomerase Inhibitors Strongly Bind and Stabilize the MYC Promoter G-Quadruplex and Downregulate MYC published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society – VM.

Experiments with human cancer cell cultures have already confirmed the antitumor activity of the compounds.

The new anticancer agents inhibit not only MYC, but also topoisomerase I, an enzyme that facilitates DNA replication and is produced in large quantities in cancer cells.

According to the authors, due to the universality of this mechanism, the compounds they found can be used to treat most types of cancer. Three more anticancer agents discovered by the team in previous studies are already at the stage of clinical trials.

Cancer is not only a deadly disease, but also a threat to the economy. According to experts, cancer deaths in the United States alone lead to lost revenues of almost $100 billion.
