Antitumor drugs in your first aid kit

Currently, the development of new antitumor drugs is on the path of searching for compounds that selectively affect certain molecular mechanisms that ensure the functioning and survival of malignant tumors.

However, despite significant successes, the use of such drugs is often associated with the development of severe side effects and only moderate improvements, and the high cost makes them inaccessible to most patients.

At the same time, specialists are receiving more and more evidence in favor of the fact that widely used inexpensive medicines intended for the treatment of various diseases (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, etc.) exhibit antitumor effects and can be used as part of complex cancer therapy.

To develop this direction, the Belgian Anticancer Fund and the American organization GlobalCures launched the ReDO project (Repurposing Drugs in Oncology, Changing the prescription of drugs in oncology). The project staff has already compiled a list of drugs, the evidence of antitumor activity of which is sufficient for conducting clinical trials.

They are currently preparing a series of articles that analyze in detail the available data on the effects of these drugs on tumors. The first article in this series is devoted to the anthelmintic drug mebendazole. The article describes convincing results of preclinical studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of the drug against many types of tumors, especially colon cancer, brain cancer, melanoma and possibly leukemia and bone cancer.

In addition to mebendazole, the antacid drug cimetidine, the anti-ischemic drug nitroglycerin, the antifungal drug itraconazole, the over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent diclofenac and the antibiotic clarithromycin look very promising candidates for the role of antitumor drugs.

Articles by Pantziarka et al. The Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) Project and
Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO)—mebendazole as an anti-cancer agent is published in the journal e cancermedicalscience.
