The algorithm individually treats bowel cancer by phenotype

Svetlana Maslova, Hi-tech+

A new computing tool has been developed by scientists from Switzerland and the Netherlands. He will select the treatment in a short time based on the individual characteristics of the patient. The first results of testing this approach have demonstrated that it always turns out to be more effective and safer than monotherapy.

Article by Zoetemelk et al. Optimized low‐dose combinatorial drug treatment boosts selectivity and efficacy of colorectal carcinoma treatment published in the journal Molecular Oncology – VM.

A computational algorithm called therapeutically guided multidrug optimization (TGMO) evaluates the phenotype of a particular patient and selects an individual treatment regimen for him. Experiments have shown that it usually consists of 2-4 drugs in a certain dosage to achieve the best results in the fight against the tumor.

The algorithm analyzes 12 drugs that are either already approved for humans or are in the final phase of clinical trials. The main goal of the scientists was to achieve the maximum effect of treatment with minimal dosages and harm to healthy tissues.

The effectiveness of the new approach was confirmed in two stages of experiments – on human tumor models and in mice with intestinal cancer.

The combinations of drugs recommended by the algorithm reduced tumor growth by about 80% and always exceeded the effect of monotherapy. At the same time, the treatment was non-toxic for healthy tissues.

"We see that it is possible to effectively determine the synergistic properties of drugs in minimal dosages regardless of mutations in the tumor, which, moreover, are better than monotherapy," the authors concluded.

It is important to note that the "recipe" will be ready within two weeks. This is usually the time that passes from diagnosis to therapy, so scientists see their tool as a great help for oncologists. They will have a tool for personalized therapy, which not only fights the disease better, but also helps to maintain health, they added.
