Encephaloduroarteriosinangiosis

Vascular surgery reduces the risk of repeated strokes by 4 times

The main goal of surgical intervention is to provide new pathways for oxygen—rich blood to the brain. The second phase of clinical studies has shown that such treatment significantly reduces the risk of relapse and is very effective in patients with severe atherosclerosis.

With atherosclerosis, the blood vessels leading to the brain narrow and this condition seriously increases the risk of one or a series of strokes in a patient for several years. Scientists from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (USA) presented the results of the second phase of clinical trials, where patients with atherosclerosis underwent encephaloduroarteriosinangiosis (EDAS) — surgical operation on the vessels of the brain.

Article by Quintero-Consuegra et al. Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis Averts Stroke in Atherosclerotic Patients With Border-Zone Infarct: Post Hoc Analysis From a Performance Criterion Phase II Trial published in the journal Neurosurgery – VM.

The point of the operation is to redirect the arteries from the meninges to the brain segments that are at risk of stroke.

If we compare this with gardening, scientists explain, then as a result of the operation, like roots, new blood vessels are formed and thereby new pathways for oxygen-enriched blood to brain tissues are created.

It is known that the brain needs a constant flow of oxygen-rich blood for normal functioning. The EDAS method provides such conditions and is minimally invasive compared to other treatment options.

Observations showed that after the use of EDAS, the frequency of repeated strokes decreased from 37% to 10.7% for an average of two years after the first stroke.

Currently, the team has already launched the final phase of trials, after which the EDAS method can be considered as a recommendation for patients with atherosclerosis to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke.
