The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday, June 21, approved the sale of a new drug – the so–called female viagra - despite the skeptical attitude of the medical community. This is reported by the press release of the FDA approves new treatment for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women.

"There are women who have decreased sexual desire for unknown reasons. This condition causes distress. Such women can benefit from safe and effective pharmacological treatment," said Hilton Joff, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation.

The new medicine is available under the brand name Vyleesi, it is also known as bremelanotide, or "Barbie medicine". It is a synthetic hormone that activates key brain receptors that are involved in sexual reactions. The drug reduces "inhibition" and increases nervous excitement.

Vyleesi is administered by injection, using a pen-shaped device. Women can use "Viagra" independently in the periods preceding menopause, with reduced sex drive.

The manufacturer of the new drug, AMAG Pharmaceuticals Inc., recommends giving an injection 45 minutes before the "expected proximity".

Meanwhile, the FDA admits that the mechanism of action of Vyleesi in the brain is still unknown. Therefore, women are advised not to take more than one dose within 24 hours – or not to take more than eight injections in a month.

However, a reduced sexual desire can be a signal of negative psychological processes, including stress, which needs to be treated, rather than dulling its symptoms with medications. In this regard, some experts insist that additional studies of Vyleesi are needed, and the FDA, according to them, did not even convene an advisory group before giving the green light to drug sales.

"Unfortunately, the FDA has decided to approve this drug despite scant data and a complete lack of information about the safety of its long–term use," said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research.

In 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration already gave the go–ahead for the production of another drug that increases sexual desire in women - flibanserin. Then clinical trials also did not prove its effect.
