Gentle method

Scientists of the I. Kant BFU have found a new effective way to diagnose cervical cancer in women

Researchers of the I. Kant BFU have received a patent for a new low-traumatic method of diagnosing cervical cancer. The method can be used for laboratory diagnostics of neoplastic pathology, i.e. processes caused by uncontrolled proliferation of atypical cells, as well as for the detection of other diseases of the cervix in women. The essence of the new method is to obtain noninvasively the material of the cervix and cervical canal, which is possible during gynecological examination, followed by the preparation of paraffin blocks and paraffin sections of the material. After that, histological and, if necessary, immunohistochemical examination of the material is carried out, which expands diagnostic capabilities compared to conventional cytological examination.

According to the head of the professor, MD, head of the laboratory of immunohistochemical, pathoanatomic and clinical diagnostics Larisa Volkova, the new method is aimed at increasing diagnostic capabilities in the detection of dysplasia and cervical cancer:

"The new method of diagnosing cervical pathology differs from the traditional cytological examination. It is based on the application of the method of liquid cytology with the further formation of cell blocks based on the material of the cervix and cervical canal. Paraffin sections are made from the obtained material for subsequent histological and immunohistochemical examination, which significantly increases the possibilities of traditional cytological examination."

The researchers note that breast cancer and cervical carcinoma occupy the first places in the structure of female pathology. Cervical cancer has a long period of development, during which precancerous changes and diseases can be detected, the treatment of which makes it possible to prevent the development of cancer in a timely manner.

"The invention allows a gentle method without conducting a biopsy study to obtain a sufficient amount of informative material for the purpose of timely diagnosis of pathological changes preceding the development of cancer," Larisa Vladimirovna explained.

The authors of a new non-invasive method for diagnosing cervical pathology in women are the head of. Professor Larisa Volkova, PhD student N. Kozlov, Vice-rector for Scientific Work M. Demin and clinical resident in the specialty "pathological anatomy" A. Antishina. The decision to grant a patent for an invention of the I. Kant BFU was issued by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (ROSPATENT).
