Kill zombies

Extermination of zombie cells will eliminate complications in diabetes

American researchers from the Mayo Medical Clinic have proved that the removal of aging cells, the so-called zombie cells, from adipose tissue affects the severity of diabetes mellitus. The team conducted experiments with mice and proved the positive effect of therapy for severe complications, EurekAlert reports! (Removal of 'zombie cells' alleviates causes of diabetes in obese mice).

Article by Palmer et al. Targeting senescent cells alleviates obesity‐induced metabolic dysfunction is published in the journal Aging Cell – VM.

Inflammation and dysfunction of adipose tissue cause insulin resistance in obese people. In many cases, these problems are caused by zombie cells, which also accumulate in the tissue against the background of the development of diabetes in humans, the researchers explain.

Scientists decided to remove cells from the body of mice and conducted two experiments. In the first case, the cells were removed using genetic tools, and in the second – thanks to senolytic drugs that selectively fight it.

Both methods improved glucose levels, as well as the sensitivity of rodents to insulin. The mice also showed a decrease in inflammatory processes, and the healthy function of fat cells was stabilized. In addition, kidney and heart functions also improved after senolytics.

The authors believe that senolytic drugs have great potential for the treatment of obesity-related inflammation, metabolic dysfunction and diabetes. Their assumptions and conclusions will be tested in new studies.

Complications due to diabetes affect many body systems, and the cardiovascular system is one of the first to suffer. This knowledge was recently used by another group of scientists from the USA, who created a method for early diagnosis of the disease by changes in blood vessels. Home–use test - a smartphone is enough for diagnosis.
