The new 3-in-1 contraceptive gel protects against pregnancy by 100%

In addition to protecting against unwanted pregnancy, the new gel increases libido and has an antiviral effect. The effectiveness of all three parameters has been confirmed in preclinical tests on pigs and rats.

The gel contains contraceptive gossypol, antiviral tenofovir, as well as nitroglycerin to stimulate blood flow. Testing of the properties was carried out on pigs, which showed almost complete destruction of sperm in 30 seconds. Lower concentrations of the substance were equally effective for up to 180 seconds.

Then the scientists studied the effect of the gel against the lentivirus (HIV is a prominent representative of this family of viruses) and confirmed that it has an inhibitory effect and can reduce the risks of sexually transmitted diseases.

At the same time, the gel does not damage the epithelial cells of the vagina, scientists have found.

The contraceptive effect was compared with an already available analogue containing nonoxynol. In the new gel group, none of the nine females experienced pregnancy, and one case was recorded in the nonxinol group. Libido-boosting properties were evaluated in rats, which showed more frequent mating in individuals against the background of a new gel.

"Our three–functional gel has shown higher efficiency compared to other remedies for unwanted pregnancy currently on the market," commented co–author Ke Cheng, "It has great potential for safer and better sexual intercourse."

All three components of the drug separately have already been approved for use in humans, so scientists hope for the imminent launch of clinical trials of the gel.
