New data presented at The EASO International Congress clearly indicates the effectiveness of testosterone therapy for men suffering from high degree of obesity. In certain cases, this method of treatment may be no less effective than bariatric surgery.

Studies have repeatedly noted low testosterone levels in men with a high degree of obesity. It is also a common symptom of hypogonadism, decreased function of the genital glands. Some scientists call the complex two-way relationship between obesity and low testosterone a "vicious circle."

Specialists from Saudi Arabia has been investigating the relationship between testosterone and obesity for more than 10 years. At the International Congress on Obesity, they presented data collected over 15 years on 471 men with hypodynamism, 276 of whom underwent long-term testosterone therapy.

Over the next eight years, men from the first group lost an average of 23 kg, from the control group – lost an average of 6 kg. Waist size, body mass index and the amount of visceral fat also showed differences in the progress of the first group compared to the second.

Moreover, mortality in the testosterone group was significantly lower than in the control group: 7.6% versus 32.3%. In addition, 20% of the control group developed type 2 diabetes.

Separately, scientists examined a subgroup of 76 men suffering from third-degree obesity. In this case, doctors usually recommend bariatric surgery. 59 of them received testosterone as part of the experiment and lost an average of 30 kg, 25 kg more than the control subgroup.

The study requires careful analysis before testosterone therapy can be recommended as one of the methods of treating obesity in men.
