Scientists announce the launch of the first phase of clinical trials, in which 100 patients with solid metastatic tumors will receive therapy. At the moment, in preclinical models, she has shown excellent results in the fight against colon, lung, breast, ovarian, pancreatic and other types of tumors. It is planned that the treatment will strengthen the most promising and safe method of cancer treatment — immunotherapy.

Oncolytic viruses purposefully destroy cancer cells and use the tumor as a "factory" to produce even more anti-cancer viral particles. At the moment, it is known that oncolytic viruses can stimulate the immune system to respond better to cancer, and also make it more susceptible to immunotherapy. Now American scientists from the City of Hope Medical Center have announced the launch of the first phase of clinical trials of the CF33-HNIs oncolytic virus in people with solid metastatic tumors.

At the first stage, patients will be injected with CF33-HNIs intravenously or topically to assess safety. Then the participants will receive a combination of viral and immunotherapy (the drug pembrolizumab). In total, 100 people from the USA and Australia with various types of solid tumors will participate in the study.

In preclinical models, oncolytic viruses effectively fought colon, lung, breast, ovarian, pancreatic and other types of tumors. Scientists are counting on confirmation of these results in humans.

Recently, in another study, scientists demonstrated the effectiveness of CAR T-cell therapy against solid tumors. Until now, this method of immunotherapy has been effective only against blood cancer.
