The Center for Genomic Bioinformatics of St. Petersburg State University begins work

On April 27, 2012, the announcement of a major scientific project – the Center for Genomic Bioinformatics of St. Petersburg University will take place.

The center will be named after Feodosiy Dobrzhansky, the founder of population genetics and modern synthetic theory of evolution, who worked at St. Petersburg State University in 1924-1927.

The Center will carry out scientific and pedagogical activities under the leadership of Dr. Stefan D. O'Brien, currently working at St. Petersburg State University with the support of a megagrant of the Government of the Russian Federation, Dr. Pavel Pevzner, working at St. Petersburg Academic University with a similar grant from the Government of the Russian Federation, and Dr. Andrey Kozlov, Director Biomedical Center and professor of St. Petersburg State University.

The center's scientific research will focus on the study of genetic resistance to infectious diseases and cancer, comparative study of the organization of genomes of different species, and the biology of nature conservation.

On April 27-28, 2012, St. Petersburg State University will host an international scientific conference dedicated to the opening of the center. It will be held in the Petrovsky Hall of the building of the Twelve Colleges of St. Petersburg State University.

The conference will be presented by the heads of the center and many leading domestic and foreign scientists. The reports will be devoted to achievements in the field of comparative genomics and human genomics.
