Alternative Chinese medicine

A spare nose will grow on the forehead, an ear on the wrist, a face on the chest…

It would seem that until recently Chinese medicine was associated with herbal medicine, acupuncture and therapeutic massages. However, the reality, as it turned out, is much more optimistic. For example, it has long been known that Chinese doctors have the highest qualifications. So, surgeons of the Shanghai Children's Hospital performed a successful operation to separate two newborn girls – Siamese twins.

Not so long ago, a group of Chinese scientists helped several children with congenital pathology of the auricles – microtia. In order to correct this shortcoming, today there is a proven technique according to which the auricle is created artificially. And it happens that doctors take human cartilage tissue and already form an ear from it. However, this may cause an undesirable change in the shape of the auricle or even affect the physical condition of the patient. Employees of one of the research laboratories have proposed a revolutionary method in which the ear is "grown" directly from the cartilage cells of the patient – chondrocytes. This is done without any damage to the appearance or health of a person. Thus, five children were implanted with auricles grown from their own cells in the laboratory.

This technology was developed several years ago. In 2013, for example, doctors in the Chinese city of Fuzhou grew a nose on the forehead of their patient named Xiaoliang... The fact is that a year before the events described, a young man got into an accident with his car. As a result of an accident, he broke his nose, but did not go to the doctors in time: and so, they say, it will do. It didn't work out: the damaged cartilage began to rot. Then the surgeons had to use the technology of expanding the skin and cartilage, the cells of which they took from Xiaolian's ribs. As a result, a healthy nose grew on the boy's forehead, which doctors eventually transplanted into the place of the rotten one.

Another Chinese resident lost an ear in a car accident. However, this victim turned to doctors only a year after the incident. Nevertheless, the problem was also quite successfully solved by scientists of Xi'an Jiao Tong University. Doctors at the University hospital have created a special microimplant expander on a 3D printer. And only then they installed it under the skin of the victim's wrist, having previously taken chondrocytes from the young man's rib in the same way – his own cartilage cells. A suitable shape of the auricle was modeled and the cells were placed in an expander. It remains to wait until the ear grows by itself on the patient's arm. And then plastic surgeons transplanted the auricle onto the victim's head within seven hours.

And now scientists and doctors of the university have put on stream the creation of human organs, growing thousands of them! But this, as it turned out, is not the limit. When one of the Chinese women received severe burns to her face, plastic surgeons grew her face... on her own chest – from "native" cells and skin. And then they transplanted him to where he should be. And that's not all: at one time, Chinese scientists made a real breakthrough in medical technology by growing a patient's tooth from his own ... urine. Having isolated stem cells from human urine, scientists from The Institute of Biomedicine and Health of Guangzhou City mixed them with the biological material of mice and implanted them into rodents. And after a month or two, a soft dental tissue containing pulp, dentin and enamel was formed. The rest turned out to be a matter of technology and scientific experiments.

And the doctors of Peking University performed a unique operation to install an artificial vertebra printed on a 3D printer for a 12-year-old boy. The implantation of such an implant was the first such operation in the world, which has no precedent in the history of surgery. In addition, scientists at Hangzhou Dianzi University have created live samples of human liver using the same 3D printer. It is unknown what other surprises scientists and doctors of the Celestial Empire will present to us. But it is already clear that they will definitely not remain the last in the list of discoverers. And what will happen tomorrow? We'll wait and see!
