Three - parent Spaniards

In Europe, there will be another child "from three parents"

The controversial technique was used by the Spanish company Embryotools. Although technology can help many women get pregnant, bioethicists are still wary of it.

Doctors helped a woman get pregnant by using the cytoplasmic replacement method, MIT Technology Review reports. Cytoplasm from a donor egg was transferred to the egg of the expectant mother.

The embryo received mitochondria from the "third parent" – cellular structures responsible for energy production.

This technology not only reduces the risk of mitochondrial diseases, but also increases the likelihood of pregnancy.

The technique was developed by American researchers, but in 2015 the US Congress banned it. Therefore, the first children "from three parents" were born in states where there are no such strict rules of regulation – in Mexico and Ukraine.

Pregnancy and the birth of children is a very sensitive topic, so it is not surprising that people are suspicious of any new technologies in this area. And even some biologists are still not sure that the birth of "children from three parents" is safe. They call for the use of technology is permissible only to combat hereditary diseases, but not infertility.

Although the birth of children "from three parents" remains a scandalous topic, it cannot be compared to the gene editing of children, which was announced by Chinese geneticist He Jiankui at the end of last year. Now the country's authorities are investigating this story. According to them, as a result of the experiment, another child will be born.
