A head transplant?

Now it's possible

Daniil Alexandrov, Slon.ruProfessor Sergio Canavero from the University of Turin published an article in Surgical Neurology International, in which he justified the possibility and technically described the process of transplanting a human head – or, if you look at it differently, replacing one body with another.

The means of modern medicine quite allow it, the scientist believes.

Sergio Canavero's article along with an epigraph from Tsiolkovsky "The impossible today will become possible tomorrow" is published in the open access – HEAVEN: The head anastomosis venture Project outline for the first human head transplantation with spinal linkage (GEMINI). And for those who are not strong in English, it should be clarified that HEAVEN here is not "my God" or "heaven", but an abbreviation of the project name (HEad Anastomosis VENture), and GEMINI is not "gemini", not the old US space program, etc., but a method of replantation using a polymer gel – VM.

In fact, many have already forgotten, but in 1973, American neurosurgeon Robert Joseph White had already managed to perform several similar operations on rhesus monkeys. After waking up, the monkeys even lived for several days, although they remained completely paralyzed. Then they were put to sleep for humane reasons.

Practically the same technology can be used today for human brain transplantation – together with the head: cool the body and head to 18 ° C, drain all the blood from the head, connect the spinal column, esophagus, vessels in the right places, fix the head on pins and connect the wounds with a special biopolymer.

The diagram shows how it was done with the unfortunate animals.

And here's what the macaque looked like after the operation.

White had been planning to repeat his operation on a human all his life, but in 2010 he died before he could carry out the plan. After the resounding success of a full face transplant operation, Kanavero believes, a head transplant no longer seems fantastic. It is clear that the indication for such an operation can only be a life-threatening injury to the patient associated with complete paralysis. But the day when there will be the first person who will agree to become Professor Dowell is not far off.
