Do I need extra vitamin D in winter?

The benefits of vitamin D supplements are questionable

Medical Xpress news: Current evidence does not support vitamin D supplements to prevent disease

Vitamin D is produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight. In autumn and winter, when there are more cloudy days, doctors recommend regularly taking dietary supplements containing this vitamin, as it is important for mineral metabolism in bones and muscles. If this vitamin is not enough in the body, such pathological conditions as rickets or osteoporosis may develop.

Scientists from the University of Auckland (University of Auckland, New Zealand) and the University of Aberdeen (University of Aberdeen, Scotland) analyzed the available clinical studies in which dietary supplements containing vitamin D were used. In the course of the work done, the scientific group led by Associate Professor Mark Bolland (Mark Bolland) did not find any evidence that supplements really work. According to experts, the use of vitamin D as a supplement to food did not give any positive effect on the bones and muscles of the study participants. Regardless of whether people used vitamin supplements or not, there was no difference in the number of fractures and other cases of bone destruction.

According to the results of the work, Associate Professor Bolland and his colleagues published an article in the scientific journal The BMJ (Should healthy people take a vitamin D supplement in winter months? – VM), which indicated that taking dietary supplements with vitamin D can be useful only to people at risk – those who have a serious deficiency in their body. The rest, the scientists noted, it is quite enough even in the cold and cloudy season to follow a diet and try to go out more often on sunny days. The publication caused controversy in the scientific community – some experts opposed the opinion of its authors, pointing out that the recommendations for admission are based on scientific data, others called the lack of vitamin D a pseudo-disease.
