Galen Award – 2013

The Galen Prize will be awarded in Russia

Elena Lozovskaya, "Science and Life"Starting in 2013, Russian scientists will be able to participate in the competition for one of the most prestigious awards in the field of medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological research.

The award, named in honor of the famous doctor of antiquity, was established in 1970 by the French pharmacist Roland Mel in order to popularize outstanding achievements in pharmacological research.

Every year, the Prix Galien brings well-deserved recognition to the most significant drugs that have entered the pharmaceutical market, as well as outstanding achievements of pharmaceutical researchers.

Initially, the prize was awarded only in France, but by now it covers more than 15 countries. The winners of the national award receive the right to apply for the Galen International Prize, which is awarded every two years.

The creation of the Russian Galen Prize was officially announced on February 7, 2013 at the French Embassy. French Ambassador to Russia Jean de Gliniasti noted that scientific communication between Russia and France has been going on for several centuries. In particular, Ilya Mechnikov and Nikolai Gamaleya successfully worked at the Pasteur Institute, established in 1888. In recent years, more than forty young Russian researchers have received a scholarship from the French government to work in French scientific laboratories.

"The Galen Prize for laureates is a sign of worldwide recognition. It refers to the area where science comes into contact with industrial developments and humanitarian initiatives, where private or personal initiative meets state policy. The award not only celebrates personal achievements and innovations. It also encourages us to improve the quality of state policy implementation and strengthen international cooperation," the Ambassador said.

Frederic Bushesesh, Secretary General of the Russian Galena Prize, said that the Russian mechanism of the Galena Prize will be modeled on all other national committees: an independent jury of nine scientists invited taking into account their fame and impartiality.

The jury of the Russian Galen Prize included recognized experts in the field of medical and pharmaceutical research: A. G. Chuchalin, V. T. Ivashkin, E. L. Nasonov, R. V. Petrov, D. Y. Pushkar, G. T. Sukhoi, E. D. Sverdlov, V. A. Tkachuk, M. V. Ugryumov.

The prize will be awarded for achievements in the following areas:

  • the best medicine;
  • the best biotechnological product;
  • the best medical device;
  • Russian Galen Prize for scientific work (special jury award).

Frederick Busceses explained that applications will be considered on the merits, in accordance with two main questions: what is the innovation in scientific or clinical work on a product and what lessons can biomedical science learn from the clinical development of this product. Criteria such as the scale of the market or company, the cost of development and special distribution conditions will not be taken into account, he stressed.

The winners of the first annual Russian Galen Prize will be awarded at a ceremony in Moscow on October 24, 2013.

The winners will be awarded a medal, and the winners of the first two categories will have the opportunity to participate in the International Galena Prize, awarded every two years.

The right to award the award is granted to products (medicines or medical devices) approved for sale in Russia no later than December 31 of the year preceding the year of receipt of the award, but not earlier than five years before that.

The start of accepting applications is February 14, 2013.

The deadline for submitting applications is no later than May 30, 2013.

The participants of the competition are required to provide information about a pharmaceutical product or device, conducted research and justification of its benefits for health and society (the volume of the application is 14 pages).
