Ebolization of Russia

Oleg Fomin, "General Newspaper"

When your ward feels bad, you need to switch his attention to some external factors. Tactics proven for centuries. In politics, it is an external enemy and another threat to "progressive/civilized humanity." If you are not coping with the work "here", you need to do something that "here" is not necessary at all, but what supposedly all of humanity will be interested in at once and will quickly enroll you in their saviors.

According to the latest matrix, the Russian Ministry of Health is working today. The population of the country and doctors are howling from the reform, there are no specialists in polyclinics, medicines in pharmacies are becoming more expensive at an inhuman rate. In a word, there is nothing to brag about. And here it is, a lifesaver: Ebola fever and the diseases caused by it (EVD). We have invented a vaccine against it, as many as 4 pieces.

Personally, at times it seems to me that the hysteria around Ebola in terms of implementation technology resembles cries about AIDS at a certain stage of the promotion of this "brand". Or "bird flu". And pharmaceutical companies, in particular, are interested in this. Judge for yourself. The Ebola epidemic began a year ago in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Guinea. During the year, 9,200 people died from BBBE. 23 thousand were infected. The world has known about this infection for 40 (forty) years. But the World Health Organization has not pedaled the development of a vaccine. There were two reasons: a small market for the production of a finished drug and a high cost of development. Today, in order to launch a drug "in series", it is necessary to spend at least $ 800 million for the entire previous cycle. WHO does not have such money, nor do African countries. Last December, the US Congress allocated 5.4 billion to fight the epidemic. Which, by the way, is now on the decline.

Canadians and Americans quickly developed a vaccine, though, according to the media, not very effective. The world's leading "profile companies" – GlaxoSmithKline, NewLink Genetics together with Merck, Johnson & Johnson in cooperation with Bavarian Nordic, Novavax, Chimerix - joined the race. But it's not just the USA and Europe that are bustling. The Japanese suddenly discovered that the flu medicine "Favipiravir" also treats Ebola. And the Russian Ministry of Health suddenly burst into this "hot" topic with the ninth wave.

In October 2014, the leadership of the federal department announced that the country is developing an Ebola vaccine, and in parallel in Novosibirsk and Sergiev Posad. And two more vaccines are being prepared. Perhaps Veronika Skvortsova decided to fit into the topic of the fight against EVD against the background of the words of the President of Russia, said during a meeting with the head of WHO. Vladimir Putin spoke about assistance in the fight against Ebola and about the great opportunities of the country.

Why is the Ministry of Health so actively covering the topic of vaccine production? It is not needed for domestic consumption – there are no conditions for the spread of the Ebola virus in Russia. This was officially reported by Veronika Skvortsova herself. Release it and sell it on the world market? But it is already clear in advance that global manufacturers and, with their submission, WHO officials will do everything to prevent this from happening. It is no coincidence that last fall, the head of this organization, Margaret Chan, put all the dots on the I: the most promising drugs for Ebola are the VSV-EBOV and ChAd-EBO vaccines (developed by the British GlaxoSmithKline), she said.

But huge funds are invested in the development of 4 (!) types of vaccines. Which could be used to develop other vaccines. Talks about the full production cycle of which have been going on in the Government and the Ministry of Health for two years. For example, inactivated polio vaccine is not produced in our country. Which would be relevant in view of the ambiguous attitude to the "live" vaccine, which is produced in the Russian Federation. There is also no vaccine against pneumococcal infection (this year the Ministry of Health purchased this vaccine from the American Pfizer for 3.4 billion rubles – a third (!) of the entire budget for the purchase of vaccines), against hemophilic infection, against the well-known "chickenpox" (chickenpox). That would be where the Ministry of Health should direct efforts! Or concentrate them on developing a cure for Alzheimer's disease – and this is much more necessary and relevant for Russia than Ebola. Alas. To Skvortsova's department, empty PR in the international arena is more important than real steps to preserve the health of Russian citizens.
