Maximum – 940 years in prison

A long time will have to be spent by a "scientist" who earned money on fake drug tests

Alexandra "Renoire" Alekseeva, XX2 century, based on the Tri-City Herald

A "medical researcher" from Tri-Cities, an agglomeration of the cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland, earned $5.6 million by falsifying human trials of potential drugs. Most likely, he will have to spend his time to death.

42-year-old Sami Anwar studied to be a doctor in his native Pakistan, but did not receive a medical license in the United States. However, he posed as a doctor and forged signatures of doctors who worked for him. The federal authorities ordered him to stop doing that, but he didn't listen.

Our hero has been in jail since November 2018 – then federal prosecutors suspected him of intimidating former employees who could testify against him. But Anwar's main offense is that he "falsely tested" drugs intended for the treatment of various diseases. According to the investigation materials, in fact, he poured the drugs "into the pipe" and lied that he gave them to patients. All this happened on the basis of Anwar's two medical companies in Richland – Mid-Columbia Research and Zain Research, which served as a cover for fraudulent activities.

For the entire period of his activity – from 2013 to 2018 – he forged the results of an incredible number of studies on the safety and effectiveness of drugs, which earned 5.6 million dollars. The spectrum of diseases, the treatment of which was supposed to be tested drugs, is very wide – these are heart diseases, diabetes, and smoking among adolescents – up to cirrhosis of the liver and scabies. Anwar provided fake results to pharmaceutical companies. And from them, data on imaginary safety and effectiveness were received in The Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As a result of the proceedings, which took place in the Richland Federal Court and lasted three weeks, Anwar was found guilty of 47 criminal offenses. Most of his crimes were classified as fraud using mail (mail fraud) and means of communication (wire fraud). He was also charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, obtaining medicines fraudulently and providing false information in Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). For each of the 47 articles, he can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison. That is, given that in the United States the terms are not absorbed, but are added up, the attacker will most likely not get out of prison until the end of his life.

Anwar's former employees confirmed that he had persuaded them to go on malicious intent. What were they doing? Falsification of medical records, data on taking medications, results of examinations (including electrocardiograms and blood tests).

His company Mid-Columbia Research went through the same 47 articles. Company Zain Research was also accused, among other things, of conspiracy to commit fraud, but acquitted on 45 counts.

The cherry on the cake is among the articles on which Anwar is being held – illegal possession of opioids.

Anwar did not give any comments to journalists.
