Drinkable Book – a book for water purification

Chemist Theresa Dankovich and her colleagues from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Virginia have developed a simple and inexpensive filter for purifying drinking water in the form of an ordinary book.

According to the authors, more than 780 million people are forced to drink unusable or polluted water on the planet, and the mortality rate from diseases caused by infected water or its shortage is 3.4 million annually.

The Drinkable book is part of a global water purification project in different regions of the planet. Each of the 20 pages of the "drinking book" of the book is made of filter paper coated with silver nanoparticles and is provided with perforation, and the text printed with food ink gives the necessary information about safety measures. After passing through the filter page, the water is 99.99% purified from suspended particles, disinfected and becomes drinkable.

One sheet of the book is designed to purify up to one hundred liters of water, which covers a person's monthly need, and the whole book can supply a person with drinking water for a year and a half.

The authors of the development claim that today such filters are the cheapest way to purify water: the cost of producing a Drinkable book is only $ 2.

The first edition of the book will be sent to India, Africa and China – volunteers will distribute them free of charge to those in need.
