Nanocapsules against celiac disease

Nanoparticles will help cure gluten disease

Celiac disease is a hereditary autoimmune disease that leads to damage to the intestinal microvilli when eating gluten. As a result, the efficiency of nutrient absorption decreases, which leads to diarrhea, abdominal pain and chronic fatigue.

There is no cure for celiac disease yet. However, researchers from Northwestern University plan to correct this situation. According to the New treatment may reverse celiac disease press release, they have recently successfully completed the second phase of clinical trials for the treatment of celiac disease using nanoparticles.

The new approach is based on a simple idea – to make the immune system tolerant to gluten. To do this, the glycoprotein gliadin, which is part of gluten, is loaded into tiny nanocapsules. It is assumed that he is responsible for the development of an autoimmune reaction.

During the tests, the participants received two injections of nanoparticles. Seven days after the second treatment, the researchers tested their reaction to gluten. For the first three days, participants received 12 grams of gluten daily, and for the next 11 days – 6 grams.

According to scientists, patients from the treated group tolerated gluten intake much better. The concentration of inflammatory markers in them was 90% lower than in the control group. Although only 34 people took part in the trials, their result was the first proof of the effectiveness of treatment in humans.

After the third phase of clinical trials, the FDA may speedily approve the treatment of celiac disease using nanoparticles. The pharmaceutical company Takeda has already received a license for promising therapy.

The authors note that nanocapsules can also be used to treat other autoimmune diseases, including allergies, type I diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
