Nanotechnology a la russe

Articles by Russian scientists on nanotechnology are of little interest to foreign colleagues

RIA NewsWorld experts quote few articles by Russian scientists working in the field of nanotechnology, and the situation with obtaining patents by Russian organizations on this subject is depressing, said Alexander Kuznetsov, executive director of the National Electronic Information Consortium (NEICON).

"If we take the number of citations, which is one of the serious indicators of how much the article published by the scientist is interesting to the world community, then we see that the number of citations is not so much," he said at a round table in RIA Novosti.

As follows from the materials published by Kuznetsov, over the past few years, only 22 Russian "nanotechnology" articles have been cited at least 15 times.

Kuznetsov noted that the share of Russian publications in the total number of world articles on nanotechnology is about 3%.

According to him, Russian scientists write the most articles on nanomaterials, and "the share of publications on (nano) pharmacology of Russian organizations is negligible."

As for patents in the field of nanotechnology, then, as Kuznetsov noted, "the situation here is very bad." The maximum number of patents, about 160, Russian specialists received in 2009, a year later this number dropped sharply (less than 40 patents).

The number of patents issued in the Russian Federation for inventions in the field of nanotechnology in the name of legal entities and individuals is one of the indicators of the implementation of the state program for the development of the Russian nanoindustry until 2015. In particular, in 2010, according to the plans, this number was supposed to be 650 patents.

"Very little is patented by our organizations. The trend is depressing," the executive director said.

NEICON provides access to Russian scientific institutes, universities and libraries to scientific periodical information presented in electronic form. By order of the Ministry of Education and Science, NEICON, in particular, carried out work on the analysis of the publication activity of Russian organizations that participated in the implementation of the federal target program "Development of Nanoindustry infrastructure in the Russian Federation for 2008-2011".
