Toilet seat predicts a heart attack

Scientists from the Rochester University of Technology have proposed a unique diagnostic tool for heart diseases (Toilet seat that detects congestive heart failure getting ready to begin commercialization).

As the researchers write in an article for JMIR mHealth and UHealth (Conn et al., In-Home Cardiovascular Monitoring System for Heart Failure: Comparative Study), the cardiovascular monitoring system based on toilet seats is aimed at reducing the remission rates of patients with congestive heart failure in the hospital.

Simply put, doctors have created a toilet seat that records possible symptoms of heart disease, and proved its operability.

Toilet seats, which will be provided by the research company Heart Health Intelligence as part of the FDA (FDA) approval process, will be purchased by hospitals and issued to patients with heart failure after discharge from the hospital.

These toilet seats are equipped with sensors to measure the electrical and mechanical activity of the heart and can monitor heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygenation level, patient weight and the volume of blood ejected by the heart with each contraction.

Algorithms analyze the data and, as they develop further, warn about the deterioration of the condition. The report will be sent to cardiologists, who will then determine the need for intervention.

"As a rule, within 30 days after discharge from the hospital, 25% of patients suffering from congestive heart failure experience remission," explained the founder and CEO of Heart Health Intelligence, as well as the lead author of the study Nicholas Conneck.

According to him, after 90 days of discharge from the hospital, 45% of patients return to the hospital. The toilet seat created by them will allow predicting the possibility of remission, and accelerate treatment.
