Is papillomavirus the cause of breast cancer?

The vaccine against the human papillomavirus will help protect against breast cancer

Copper news

A vaccine against human papillomavirus will help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. These conclusions were reached by Australian researchers from the University of New South Wales (University of New South Wales).

More than 100 types of papillomavirus are known, and the detection of some of them is associated with a high risk of cervical cancer. Scientists have suggested that HPV may play a role in the occurrence of breast cancer.

In order to confirm their hypothesis, the authors analyzed data from histological examination of almost 4,000 breast tissue samples. The authors selected biopsies of women who had developed breast cancer, despite the fact that the results of histological examination indicated a low risk of developing breast tumors.

The authors were able to detect the presence of human papillomavirus in 855 breast tissue samples, and some of them were HPV associated with high risk. So far, however, scientists do not know how the human papillomavirus gets into the breast tissue.

John Lawson noted that HPV types 18 and 16 were most common. He also stressed that Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, effectively prevents infection with these types, as well as types 6 and 11. The researchers believe that their findings suggest that the vaccine is able to protect not only from cervical cancer, but also to reduce the number of cases of breast cancer.

Article by Lawson et al. Human Papilloma Viruses and Breast Cancer is published in open access in the journal Frontiers in Oncology – VM.
