It hit my head

It is now possible to diagnose a concussion by urinalysis

Scientists were able to identify two informative biomarkers in urine samples that can be used to diagnose concussion. Their approach promises to make head injury detection simple and fast.

Currently, many doctors mainly rely on subjective symptoms that patients describe after a head injury. A simple instrumental diagnosis could simplify this process, so scientists from the Boston Children's Hospital began to study changes in urine indicators in people who had suffered a concussion.

Their study involved 48 patients after concussion, as well as 47 people from the control group, writes EurekAlert! It turned out that after a concussion, the levels of proteins insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and one of its binding proteins (insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 5, IGFBP5), which are believed to play an important role in the recovery of the brain after injuries, decrease in urine. "It is logical to assume that the body retains them, and does not secrete them," the authors said.

It is noteworthy that after the concussion, there were no changes in biomarkers that are already associated with other symptoms of severe brain injuries. The authors believe that in the case of concussion, completely different processes occur that have yet to be studied.

Now the team plans to confirm the accuracy of the diagnosis on a larger sample, after which it will be possible to make a decision on the introduction of the test into medical practice.
