Neuritin – immune regulator

The immune system has been found to have the ability to resist autoimmune diseases

A specific mechanism has been discovered in the human immune system, which may be the key to the treatment of allergies and autoimmune diseases. The protein neuritin plays an important role in this mechanism. The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Cell (Gonzalez-Figueroa et al., Follicular regulatory T cells produce neuritin to regulate B cells).

"Scientists have known about the participation of neuritin in the work of the brain and nervous system for a long time. We found it in the immune system and found out that it is associated with a mechanism previously unknown to science," she said. Karola Vinuesa, professor at the Australian National University and lead author of the study.

This mechanism can block autoimmune conditions. Scientists believe that it can be used to treat a wide range of disorders, including asthma. "We found that neuritin prevents the excessive formation of IgE immunoglobulin associated with the most common forms of allergies. In addition, this protein suppresses the formation of antibodies that cause autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis," Vinuesa said.

The researchers hope that their discovery will form the basis of new methods to combat allergies and autoimmune diseases. "This may be more than just a new drug, it may become a new approach to the treatment of such disorders in general. If we learn to control this mechanism, we will be able to act pointwise, providing immune tolerance without threatening the entire immune system," Vinuesa stressed.
