Noninvasive diagnosis of anemia

The app measures hemoglobin levels without taking blood

An application has been created that allows you to accurately assess the level of hemoglobin in the blood from a picture of the lower eyelid on a smartphone. The authors of the development believe that it is especially useful for the diagnosis of anemia in poor countries, where hospitals do not have the necessary equipment for conducting tests.

An international team of researchers has developed a contactless way to assess the level of hemoglobin in the blood, according to a press release from The Optical Society New Mobile Health Tool Measures Hemoglobin Without Drawing Blood. To do this, it is enough to download a special application to your smartphone and take a picture of the pulled lower eyelid. The program will convert the photo and send it to a computer, where the hemoglobin concentration will be evaluated using spectral analysis.

To train and test the algorithm, the authors used data from 153 volunteers from Kenya who were sent for a routine blood test. 138 of them helped to train the program, and 15 helped to test its effectiveness.

It turned out that the new method is not inferior to traditional approaches to assessing the level of hemoglobin.

The authors of the development note that it can significantly facilitate the diagnosis of anemia – a symptom of many diseases. This is especially true for developing countries, where hospitals often do not have the necessary equipment for this. In addition, the application will allow you to assess the level of hemoglobin in the blood remotely, without having to visit a doctor.

The article by Park et al. mHealth spectroscopy of blood hemoglobin with spectral super-resolution is published in the journal Optica – VM.
