AI accurately predicts the outcome of COVID-19 disease for any patient

This will help doctors to be one step ahead of the disease and choose the most effective treatment strategy for each individual.

Scientists from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has developed an artificial intelligence algorithm that analyzes the medical data of a patient with COVID-19 and accurately predicts the outcome of his condition. To do this, he studies CT scans of the chest, vital signs of the body and the results of laboratory blood tests. Additionally, the age and gender of patients are taken into account.

The press release of Rensselaer-Developed Algorithm Accurately Predicts COVID-19 Patient Outcomes is published on the Institute's website, article by Chao et al. Integrative analysis for COVID-19 patient outcome prediction – in the journal Medical Image Analysis.

The informativeness of AI was tested on medical data of 295 patients from the USA, Iran and Italy. As a result, scientists could compare the AI verdict and the treatment already performed for the patient.

The test showed that the AI was able to accurately identify those who needed treatment in the intensive care unit.

"Artificial intelligence allows you to analyze a large amount of data and make predictions that are not always obvious to a doctor," the scientists explain. In a pandemic, when the incidence is constantly increasing, such tools are especially useful for doctors who are simultaneously responsible for the condition of a large number of patients.

The use of such tools in clinical practice will allow the most effective choice of a patient's treatment strategy to prevent severe complications. Given the lack of a single COVID-19 treatment protocol and specialized drugs, AI can become a valuable assistant for medical personnel.
