The new ultrasound method reduces the tumor by more than 90% and does not cause severe side effects. Observation of patients a year after treatment confirmed the effectiveness of the method.

The method of transurethral ultrasound ablation called TULSA has been approved in the United States for the treatment of patients with prostate tumors. Scientists presented the results of a clinical study involving 115 men who were treated a year ago: 80% of patients had clinically significant cancer eliminated, and a year after treatment, a biopsy did not reveal any signs of cancer in 65% of men. And most importantly, the procedure takes an hour and does not cause side effects.

The press release of the Novel MRI-Guided Ultrasound Treatment Destroys Prostate Cancer is published on the website of the Radiological Society of North America. There you can also watch this video and another one, not at all for the faint of heart – VM.

Ultrasound ablation is performed under the control of MRI without incisions: a rod-shaped device is inserted into the urethra, which purposefully affects the prostate tissue, heating and destroying the tumor.

Healthy surrounding tissues are not damaged, and the process is monitored online by a doctor, controlling the degree of exposure. The whole procedure takes less than an hour.

The volume of the prostate tumor on average decreased from 30 cubic centimeters to 3.8, a survey of patients showed a year after ablation.

The treatment did not cause serious side effects, the scientists said. They recorded a low level of impotence and incontinence, as well as the absence of intestinal complications. Other prostate cancer treatments cause these side effects quite often.
