Uterus transplantation: the process has started

Nine Swedish women were successfully transplanted uterusBBC

In Sweden, as part of a pilot project, nine women were successfully transplanted uterus from their relatives. Some of them were born without a uterus, while others had it removed due to cervical cancer. All participants of the experiment are about 30 years old. It is possible that some of them will soon be able to get pregnant and, possibly, give birth.

The transplanted uterus was not connected to the fallopian tubes during the operations, which means that women can only get pregnant artificially. At the same time, all participants have their own ovaries that produce eggs necessary for artificial insemination. Attempts to transplant the uterus have previously been made twice – in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. However, in both cases, the patients could not then carry the baby.

"A new kind of surgery"A team of doctors from the University of Gothenburg, led by Professor Mats Brennstrom, selected 10 people to participate in the project.

Due to health problems, one of the women had to abandon the operation, while the rest underwent a uterus transplant.

Last year, Brennstrom's group reported on the first successful uterus transplant operations as part of a project that has been working on since 1999. "This is a completely new type of surgery. There are no textbooks to check," Professor Brennstrom said.

Doctors in other countries, including Britain and Hungary, are also planning to carry out similar operations. The interest in the project turned out to be so great that Swedish doctors are going to organize seminars on transferring experience to colleagues. It is expected that very soon they will publish a detailed report in one of the scientific journals.
