Without shaving and gel

In China, they invented electrodes for reading thoughts through hair

To track the electrical activity of the brain, electrodes coated with a special gel must be attached to the skin of the skull. However, due to the hair, there may be interference in the signal. In addition, the gel is quite difficult to wash off.

Researchers from Tsinghua University, whose work is described in the ACS press release, has developed an alternative solution - cheap electrodes that read electrical signals of the brain through the hair without using gel. They are based on silver nanofibers immersed in a spongy material.

The article by Lin et al. A Flexible, Robust, and Gel-Free Electroencephalogram Electrode for Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interfaces is published in the journal Nano Letters – VM.

Experiments have shown that a set of 10 new electrodes works on volunteers with a shaved head as well as the traditional approach. However, unlike conventional electrodes, the new ones effectively read signals through the hair.

During the demonstration, a female volunteer used a new development to control a toy car exclusively with the help of brain activity. At the same time, her head was not shaved.

According to the authors, the new type of electrodes stimulate the development of brain-computer interfaces, making them much more convenient.
