A disease that doesn't exist

In St. Petersburg, within the framework of the conference "Biomedical innovations for healthy longevity", scientists, public figures and journalists exchanged views on the issues of prolonging youth, longevity and the fight against aging. The researchers also spoke about the latest achievements in this field, published in leading scientific journals.

The fight against aging is a topic that has been gaining momentum in the media space for the last decade, although its popularity is still not too high.

According to the apt expression of John Carroll, editor-in-chief of the biotechnological portal FiercePharma, life extension attracts attention only when it gets into the tabloids. "The British gerontologist refused sex in order to live longer – this is a topic that is quickly picked up and diverged," he said.

Despite the seeming relevance, life extension does not always find a response among the public. Activists conduct special sociological research, trying to understand how to push the mass audience to interest in the topic. So, according to the director of the public organization "Optimum Health" Elena Milova, it is not necessary to focus on possible negative aspects of life extension, such as overpopulation, lack of money, alienation from relatives or an increase in the duration of illnesses, but appeal to the public with positive aspects – more time allowed to be with family, wider life experience, more achievements.

Changes are expected not only from mass audiences, but also from the "match". The same John Carroll expressed the opinion that ten years ago, the fight against aging did not go beyond deep fundamental research, while now it is noted that in the next 10 years we can expect breakthroughs to finished products.

Of course, no one knows what products we can talk about yet. However, scientific articles on practical methods of combating aging are being published more and more often.
