Telomerase activator tested on humans

Anna Sablina, Eternalmind.ru based on PR Newswire materials:
Lengthened Telomeres Restore Immune System to a Younger StateA group of independent scientists summed up the results of a study of the effect on the health of elderly (average age 63 years) people of the telomerase activator TA-65® isolated from the roots of the plant Astragalus membranaceus.

It turned out that the drug had the greatest rejuvenating effect on the immune system of the subjects.

The food additive TA-65 is a capsule containing a substance isolated from the extract of the dried root of Astragalus membranaceus, and an inert filler. The rights to the drug were purchased by Telomerase Activation Sciences, Inc. ("T.A. Sciences") from the well-known biotechnology company Geron Corporation in 2002. T.A. Sciences is the first company offering nutritional supplements containing a telomerase activator.

For five years, studies of the effect of the substance on cell cultures were conducted, which revealed that nanomolar concentrations of TA-65 moderately activated telomerase in human keratinocytes, fibroblasts and immune cells.

In 2007, a human study was launched, named after the founder of T.A. Sciences PattonProtocol-1, which included their use of TA-65 in an amount of 10-50 mg per day and a set of dietary supplements. Laboratory tests were carried out before taking the drugs, as well as when taking them every 3 months for a year.

The most outstanding in vivo effects, which became reliable at 6 months, were represented by a decrease in the percentage of cells with signs of aging among cytotoxic T cells (CD8+/CD28-) and natural killers. Most of these improvements were observed in cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositive patients. The average telomere length of the patients' immune cells did not increase, but there was a significant decrease in the proportion of cells with critically short telomeres (less than 4 thousand base pairs). The researchers claim that no adverse effects were observed when using PattonProtocol-1.

The cost of TA-65 is $200-$667 per month depending on the dose. T.A. Sciences reports that half and even a quarter of the current full dose can still cause significant health improvement. The company also provides consultations of specialist doctors in telomere biology on the individual selection of admission courses.
