Treat aging, not disease

"Aging is a disease, and we will overcome it"

The goal of Life Biosciences is to give as many people as possible a chance for a healthy old age, not burdened with diseases. There is no talk of eternal life yet, but the head of the startup, David Sinclair, hopes to live until the next century.

Many researchers are confident that modern science will help humanity defeat aging in the coming decades. One of them is David Sinclair, a fellow at Harvard Medical School. His work is devoted to the search and testing of molecules that slow down age-related changes.

In 2017, Sinclair, together with former Goldman Sachs trailer Tristan Edwards, founded the startup Life Biosciences, which aims to accelerate the search for a "cure for aging." For several years, Sinclair and Edwards have been attracting the best specialists in this field. During this time, a modest startup turned into a holding company that united six companies.

Instead of looking for new treatments for the main causes of death, such as cancer or heart disease, Life Biosciences employees are investigating the fundamental causes of aging, One Zero reports.

Among them, stem cell depletion, metabolic problems, chromosome instability and loss of cell functions.

Sinclair is sure that aging should be considered not as a natural process, but as a disease that can be treated. The scientist admits that there is no question of eternal life yet. However, he intends to develop ways that will ensure people a long life and a healthy old age without diseases.

At one time, Sinclair devoted a lot of time to studying proteins known as sirtuins. They control the body's natural defenses against disease and aging. In particular, he found out that the compound resveratrol, which is contained in the skin of grapes, activates sirtuins and slows down the aging process. The scientist hopes that Life Biosciences will be able to detect other molecules that protect against age-related changes.

Unlike many colleagues, Sinclair checks the security of the developed technologies on himself.

In addition to a healthy diet and periodic "fasting days", he takes age supplements daily. Among them, 0.5 mg of resveratrol in the morning and metformin every evening.

Not all researchers share Sinclair's views and believe in his success. According to some biologists, it is a mistake to consider aging a disease, and the search for drugs against it will turn out to be a failure. Nevertheless, if Life Biosciences achieves its goals, doctors will soon be able to prescribe preventive anti-aging drugs to patients that will slow down the development of many diseases.
