600 children, and all – in the pope

A British Jewish scientist has set a record by becoming the father of 600 children

Israel News

Biologist Berthold Wiesner, who founded an artificial insemination clinic with his wife and promised childless couples "intellectual" children, acted as a donor himself in more than half of the cases. Dr. Wiesner died in the 72nd year at the age of 70, and only now his children have learned the secret of their birth, writes the Daily Mail newspaper (British scientist 'fathered 600 children' by donating sperm at his own fertility clinic - VM).

It took the biologist's descendants many years to find out the truth, since most of the clinic's archive was destroyed by Mary Barton, Wiesner's wife. Adults from different parts of the globe are forced to do a DNA test to confirm their family ties.

This story became known thanks to one of Wiesner's sons, Canadian director Barry Stevens. In particular, he managed to find out that Bertold Wiesner had been donating sperm to the bank for 20 years.

Stevens tracked down his biological brother, London lawyer David Gollancz. Gollancz found out that he was born thanks to donor sperm when he was 12 years old. However, before meeting Barry Stevens, he knew nothing about his biological father.

Gollancz admits to having mixed feelings about discovering so many siblings. According to him, it is unpleasant for him to think that technology developed for cattle breeding was used for his birth.

About 1,500 children were born at the Wiesner and Barton Clinic in London. The clinic's services were expensive, and only very wealthy families could resort to them. David Gollancz and Barry Stevens tracked down 18 people who were born in the same clinic, and found that the father of 12 of them is Bertold Wiesner.
