A joint study by scientists from the University of Ghent (Ghent, Belgium) and Lobachevsky University (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) was recognized as the best in the field of antitumor immunotherapy by the prestigious Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer — A BMJ Oncology Journal.

The publication published the article in November 2020.

Co-author of the study, graduate student of the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine of UNN Victoria Turubanova: "This is a great victory for us. The article is widely cited and is popular. The impact factor of the journal is quite high for the biomedical field – 13.25. And the experts of this prestigious publication noted the article as the best in their field. It means that we are doing everything right, we need to strive forward, develop further."

The work was carried out in Belgium and Nizhny Novgorod. Scientists of the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine together with Belgian colleagues studied ferroptosis , a type of cell death that occurs with the participation of iron ions. When cells die, they accumulate a large amount of oxygen, the cell membrane is oxidized, and, as a result, the cellular immune response is activated.

The study was carried out first on cell cultures, and then on mice. Animals with tumors were vaccinated with an experimental vaccine with dying cells. As a result, the development of cancer stopped. This means that the development has prospects in clinical practice. Right now, scientists are continuing to investigate not only ferroptosis, but also other mechanisms of cell death that can trigger immunity.

Maria Vedunova, Director of the IBBM NNSU, Doctor of Biological Sciences: "Our study led the top publications on cancer immunotherapy in an authoritative journal. His recognition is certainly important to us. This article on ferroptosis really attracted a lot of attention. It was commented on by the nominees of the Nobel Prize. Research on immunogenic cell death in oncology is our point of growth. I hope this is not our last article in this direction, we are not going to stop."

The ferroptosis study is one of the many team projects of Lobachevsky University and the University of Ghent. UNN scientists have made a great contribution not only to the research, but also to the ideology of the project. This result was made possible thanks to a special scientific partnership that started in 2018. There were internships and joint grant research. For Nizhny Novgorod scientists, this interaction opened up opportunities for a whole line of work, and most importantly, it formed an environment for the development of new scientific ideas.
