A dog's life in a nursing home

Elite nursing home for dogs to be opened in Japan

Alexander Lenin, Rossiyskaya Gazeta

An elite nursing home for dogs will be opened in Japan in June. The first pets who will have a lucky chance to meet old age in a respectable environment are residents of the capital city of Tokyo. According to the English-language edition of The Time, the nursing home will initially be able to accept only twenty quadrupeds into its walls. However, if the experiment is considered successful, the number of guests may increase.

The organizers of the project promise to create all conditions for Japanese barbos to happily meet old age. On the basis of an unusual nursing home, there will be a swimming pool, a gym with professional trainers, a hairdresser, round-the-clock supervision of veterinarians and even climate control, which will allow maintaining a constant indoor air temperature.

We should immediately note that in order to provide the last years of his dog's life in such comfortable conditions, the Japanese will have to spend a lot. It is expected that a month of stay in a nursing home for a four-legged guest will cost an average of one thousand US dollars. At the same time, the cost will vary depending on the size of a particular individual and its breed.

Meanwhile, the authors of the idea have not forgotten about the owners of dogs. On the squares of the nursing home, rooms will be allocated for visitors, where the Japanese will be able to spend some time with their pets. If Japanese dog breeders suddenly get bored with their pets at night or at any other time, they will always be able to look at their charges. The nursing home will be equipped with a network of webcams with round-the-clock online streaming.

We should add that the idea of creating a dog nursing home belongs to the employees of Aeonpet Co., which has an extensive network throughout Japan and provides a lot of services and goods for dogs.

The president of the company Akihiro Agawa told reporters that the Tokyo version of the nursing home will be a test sample, whose experience will help to perfect the quality of service. "We hope to open nursing homes for dogs throughout Japan," Mr. Agawa said in an interview with a correspondent of the Kyodo news agency.

Strangely enough, but the aging of the Japanese nation is one of the reasons that, according to the staff of Aeonpet Co., can make their project popular in the country. Often elderly owners are unable to take care of their pets, because they spend a long time in hospitals themselves. Sometimes they need care themselves. This, in particular, is confirmed by a spokesperson for Aeonpet Co. Nanako Oishi.

"Many residents of our country have pets, but they naturally age over the years, as a result, it becomes difficult for elderly Japanese to take care of animals," she says. "We decided to open such a nursing home because, as it seems to us, there is a need for this service among dog breeders," Ms. Oisi added.

However, there are other points that will force the Japanese to give their pets to a nursing home. In many Japanese apartment buildings, it is forbidden to have dogs, and in the case of moving to a new place of residence, people are forced to somehow solve this problem. This often leads to the appearance of stray animals.

The Japanese are confident that the creation of nursing homes for dogs will help reduce the number of stray animals, most of which are simply euthanized today. So, according to the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, about 210 thousand stray cats and dogs were caught in 2012 alone, of which 160 thousand were subsequently killed.

Popular Japanese actress Mieko Asada, who is actively involved in various projects of the Ministry of Environment, told reporters that she was shocked to learn about the number of euthanized pets. According to her, about 400 stray cats and dogs are deprived of their lives in this way every day on the Japanese islands.

Recall that at the moment in Japan, dogs and cats who find themselves on the street without an accompanying person and identification marks are immediately caught. After that, they are placed on temporary detention in a shelter. If the owner does not show up after two weeks, the animals are euthanized.

However, such a short time allotted to search for owners is associated with saving public funds. After a 14-day stay in a shelter, a pet can stay there only with the money of charitable organizations. Before that, finances are allocated from the country's budget.

Employees of the Ministry of Environment support any projects that are able to help cope with the problem. So, earlier the agency offered to attach a microchip with detailed information about the owner to it when selling a pet. The level of development of Japanese technologies will allow the introduction of such chips under the skin. In case of loss of an animal, this will allow you to contact a person who has lost his four-legged friend in a short time.
