Scientists: plagiarism threatens to undermine public confidence in science and medicine
The world scientific community is faced with a serious problem of plagiarism and fraud in scientific publications, which threatens to undermine public confidence in the results of activities in the field of science and medicine, says Arthur Kaplan of NYU Langone Medical Center.
In his article The Problem of Publication-Pollution Denialism, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, he notes that "the contamination of science and medicine by plagiarism and fraud corrodes the reliability of research." According to him, the people responsible for the quality of scientific publications do not make enough efforts to solve the problem of the quality and reliability of scientific papers.
The scientist describes several reasons for the appearance of unreliable publications on the topic of science. Firstly, journals that publish "scientific" articles for money have become widespread, and about 25% of all open access journals have such publications.
Secondly, Kaplan refers to data from the journal PLoS One, according to which 14% of scientists report that their colleagues falsified the data. According to another article published in the journal Nature in 2010, plagiarism among scientific publications has taken on a staggering scale.
According to Kaplan, all these factors significantly reduce the confidence of scientists and doctors in what they read in the scientific press and devalue science as a whole.
