Homeopathy – not at government expense

In the UK, funding for homeopathy stops

Anna Kerman, XX2 century

A major British homeopathic center has lost the opportunity to spend National Health Service (NHS) money on its controversial activities.

The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine), formerly known as the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital (Royal London Homeopathic Hospital) will stop prescribing homeopathic remedies with NHS money in April.

Homeopathy is based on the idea of "like is treated like," but scientists say that homeopathic patients receive nothing but sugar in "homeopathic medicines."

Activists claim that the move to stop funding the homeopathic center has become "stunningly important and very late."

How are homeopathic pills made

Homeopathy is based on the idea that a repeatedly diluted substance that causes a disease (or symptoms similar to the symptoms of the disease) can also cure it. That is, pollen or hay can form the basis of a homeopathic "medicine" for allergies.

One part of the active substance (for example, the same pollen) is mixed with 99 parts of water or alcohol. Then this action is repeated. To obtain a dilution of "6c" – 6 times, to obtain a dilution of "100c" – 100 times. That is, a "drug" with a dilution of "6c" contains one part of the active substance per one trillion (million million) inactive. Note in parentheses: the use of the "active substance" itself, as homeopaths see it, is also very doubtful – mercury or arsenic can be used in the production of some "medicines" in homeopathy, for example.

After numerous dilutions, the resulting liquid is mixed with lactose (milk sugar) to form the very "balls" that homeopaths prescribe to patients.

According to the homeopaths themselves, the higher the dilution, the more effective the medicine.

Most often, homeopathy is used to treat asthma, ear diseases, allergies, depression, stress, anxiety disorders and arthritis.

The NHS itself states: "There is no convincing evidence that homeopathy is effective as a way of treating any disease."

The Royal London Hospital for Integrative Medicine boasts a long history of working with homeopathy. It was founded as the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in 1849 by one of the first British doctors to practice homeopathy.

But now patient brochures read: "From April 3, 2018, the Royal London Hospital for Integrative Medicine will not offer NHS-sponsored homeopathic remedies to patients as part of medical care."

The NHS speaker said: "NHS funds will not be spent on homeopathic medicine in Royal London Hospital of Integrative Medicine". It is also important that the English division of the NHS recently banned general practitioners from prescribing homeopathic remedies to patients. The head of the unit, Simon Stevens, called homeopathy "the best placebo of its kind and a way to waste NHS funds."

So, the UK is gradually getting rid of homeopathy. Now you can get these useless pills from the point of view of evidence-based medicine only in Bristol and in Glasgow.
