"Project 259"

Sugar producers hid the results of scientific research

Researchers from the University of California have published information that manufacturers of sugar-containing products in the early 60s of the last century did not allow the publication of scientific studies that showed the harmful effects of sugar on the body.

Scientific publications about the harmful effects of sugar on the body began to appear in the early 2000s, when the number of obese people began to grow rapidly in the world. Thus, studies in 2004 showed that taking sweets causes a powerful immune response in the form of a pro-inflammatory reaction of the body. Later, endocrinologists identified an increase in the consumption of sugar-containing beverages as one of the main causes of the epidemic of obesity, heart disease and cancer.

A study published in 2016 demonstrated the association of a sugar-rich diet with the development of breast cancer. But, as it turned out, such data could have appeared in the scientific press much earlier.

A group of American scientists has published data on two studies during the "Project 259" program, which have not been published. This program, which started in 1968, was aimed at finding out the effect of sucrose and complex carbohydrates consumption on bacteria living in the intestinal tract. This project was funded by the International Sugar Research Foundation (ISRF), created by American manufacturers of sugar–containing products (today's name is Sugar Association).

American researchers found in the archives of the University of Illinois an official report of scientists who carried out work on the "Project 259", which was addressed to the leadership of the ISRF. This report, not intended for print, described for the first time the various effects of complex carbohydrates and sucrose on the body. So, in animals that were given sweet syrup, the substance beta-glucuronidase was detected in the urine. In animals from the other group, who ate natural food for rodents with complex carbohydrates, urine tests were normal. And as scientists say, increased beta-glucuronidase activity is positively associated with bladder cancer and atherosclerosis.

In addition, scientists then discovered that a sucrose-rich diet increased the level of fats in the blood, which is also one of the causes of the development of cardiovascular diseases.

After seeing such unsuitable results for them, sugar industrialists immediately stopped funding these studies, and their results were never published.

The publication of results suggesting a relationship between sugar consumption and bladder cancer would most likely have adverse consequences for the sugar industry. In studies on Project 259, it was found that the urine of rats fed sucrose contained higher levels of beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that had previously been associated with bladder cancer.

The International Sugar Research Foundation is now called the Sugar Association, funded by the same sugar producers and continues to insist on its harmlessness.

The study is published in the journal PLOS Biology.
