Resveratrol: Beware of fakes!

The researcher of the properties of red wine is suspected of falsification

ABC Magazine based on San Francisco Gate: Red wine researcher accused of fraud

A scientist from the University of Connecticut, USA, known for his research on the benefits of red wine for the cardiovascular system, falsified the data of more than 100 of his examples. This was announced on January 11 by official representatives of the university.

Dipak Das has conducted several studies on the properties of resveratrol, an ingredient found in red wine and capable of bringing certain health benefits. However, Dr. Nir Barzilai, who heads a group of scientists who have been studying resveratrol for a long time at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, assures that Dr. Das is not an authoritative expert in this field.

Interest in red wine as a source of health and longevity appeared after the publication in 2006 of the results of a study in which obese mice were injected with resveratrol, which led to the normalization of their health indicators and long life of rodents. Dr. Das did not participate in that study, but decided to independently study the properties of resveratrol. According to representatives of the university, for 7 years Das fabricated and falsified data on 145 cases of the beneficial effect of the ingredient of red wine on the human body.

The U.S. Office of Research Integrity has launched an independent investigation into Dr. Das' activities. 11 research journals that have published Das' articles in recent years have been warned about possible falsification of the data indicated in his publications. Dr. Das himself has not yet commented on the accusations against him.
