Tests of the artificial heart were successful, the patient died

The Frenchman lived with a "cosmic" artificial heart for 75 days

Copper newsThe first patient whose own heart was replaced with a device, which, according to the developers, is the French biomedical company Carmat, the most advanced artificial heart of all existing in the world at the moment, died 75 days after the operation, reports Reuters (First patient fitted with Carmat artificial heart dies First patient fitted with Carmat artificial heart dies).

A 76-year-old man died on Sunday, March 2, at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris. According to a statement from the clinic, the causes of death will be carefully studied during the upcoming investigation.

The operation to install the Carmat heart was performed to the patient on December 18, 2013 by a team of 16 cardiac surgeons led by the device developer Alain Carpentier. It was reported that the condition of a man who was on the verge of death on the eve of the operation and voluntarily decided to participate in the first clinical trials of the device improved significantly and remained so until recently.

The Carmat heart is a biomechanical analogue of a living heart and is designed to fully replace this organ for a sufficiently long period of time that a patient may need while waiting for a donor heart transplant. Carpentier has been developing it for a total of 25 years and in 2008 created Carmat as a subsidiary of the European Aerospace and Defense Concern (EADS) Astrium, which gave him and his colleagues access to space technologies. Among the advantages of the Carmat heart over existing devices are light weight and high, thanks to the use of the most modern synthetic and biomaterials, biocompatibility with the body's own tissues and organs, reducing the risk of rejection. The developers claim that the device is designed for 230 million cuts and at least five years of uninterrupted service, allowing the patient to lead a normal lifestyle.

Despite the death of the first patient, clinical trials of the Carmat heart will continue – three more French patients who are in the terminal stage of heart failure are now waiting for its installation. The test results will be considered successful if the participants manage to live with the implant for at least a month. In this case, the Carmat heart will be implanted in 20 more patients in less serious condition.
