Replacing butter (cow's) butter with vegetable fats rich in linoleic acid leads to a decrease in cholesterol levels in the blood, but does not affect the indicators of cardiovascular diseases. The study of American nutritionists is published in the British Medical Journal (Ramsden et al., Re-evaluation of the traditional diet-heart hypothesis: analysis of recovered data from Minnesota Coronary Experiment (1968-73)).

Doctors set out to test the traditional statement about the health benefits of eating vegetable fats (in particular, corn, soy, linseed and sunflower oil) over animals (for example, cow). Experts conducted a fractional analysis of the MCE (Minnesota Coronary Experiment) study.

The experiment took place in Minnesota in 1968-1973 in order to find out the effect of replacing animal fats with vegetable fats on the incidence of coronary heart disease and mortality caused by a decrease in cholesterol levels in the blood. The MCE was attended by 9423 people aged 20-97 years from a nursing home and six psychiatric hospitals.

Nutritionists found in those who replaced animal fats with vegetable fats in their diet, compared with the control group, a decrease in serum cholesterol levels, but did not find confirmation of the hypothesis that vegetable oils rich in linoleic acid reduce the risk of mortality from coronary heart disease or other causes.

According to scientists, the publication of incomplete MCE data contributed to the spread of opinion in society about the advantage of vegetable fats over animals. Scientists in their study do not give recommendations for replacing one type of oil with others, but urge caution to dietary recommendations based on incomplete reporting.

In 2009, the American Heart Association reported that a diet low in saturated fat and high (5-10 percent of daily calorie intake) in linoleic and omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids is beneficial for the human cardiovascular system.
