Epidemiological study of scientists from The University of West Virginia has shown that the daily intake of glucosamine it can reduce the risks of mortality from cardiovascular diseases up to 65% and mortality from other causes up to 39%.

Article by King et al. Glucosamine/Chondroitin and Mortality in a US NHANES Cohort published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine – VM.

Glucosamine belongs to chondroprotectors and is used to prevent the progression of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, although there is no unambiguous opinion about the effectiveness of the drug, for example, to reduce pain in osteoarthritis, among doctors and patients. The author of the study, Dan King, drew attention to this drug thanks to his hobby. All participants of the cycling club he attends take glucosamine.

Scientists decided to find out whether the daily intake of the drug is associated with a decrease in mortality. In the study, they analyzed data from 16,686 people aged 40 and older. These volunteers participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2010. Scientists analyzed their health status, medication intake, as well as gender, smoking status, activity level and other indicators.

"The results look very encouraging, but it is important to emphasize that our study is epidemiological, not clinical," commented King. So far, the authors cannot unequivocally state that glucosamine reduces the risks of mortality. Randomized trials are needed for these findings.

Meanwhile, King, who himself takes the supplement daily, still recommends consulting with his doctor to assess the potential of glucosamine for a particular person. "The medicine is sold without a prescription, but its appointment must be approved by a doctor," he concluded.

It is impossible to replace regular physical activity with glucosamine, the researchers emphasize, who will continue to study the properties of the drug as an auxiliary preventive agent.
