Study: It is better for the wounded to get to the hospital by taxi, not by Ambulance

Victims of gunshot or knife wounds have less chance of survival if they are taken to the clinic by an ambulance rather than a taxi. This is evidenced by the results of a study published on September 20 in the journal JAMA Surgery (Wandling et al., Association of Prehospital Mode of Transport With Mortality in Penetrating Trauma – VM).

When it comes to certain types of injuries, for example, knife and gunshot, it is better to get to the clinic as soon as possible in any possible way. This was stated by the author of the study Elliot Hout, MD and professor of surgery and emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

As part of the study, scientists studied data from the National Database of Injuries created by the American College of Surgeons. They analyzed information about 103 thousand patients over the age of 16 who were admitted to the trauma center due to gunshot or knife wounds.

Approximately 16.4% of all patients were taken to the hospital by private transport, for example, by taxi. Scientists found that the mortality rate in the group of these patients was only 2.2%, while among patients hospitalized by Ambulance, it was at the level of 11.6%. At the same time, only among the victims with gunshot wounds, this figure was 4.5% versus 19.3%.

After assessing the differences in the severity of injuries in patients with penetrating injuries, the scientists concluded that those who arrive at the hospital by taxi are on average 62% less likely to die than those who are brought by Ambulance.

– The type of such damage usually cannot be stopped in a pre–hospital setting, unlike a situation with heart attacks, when it is the provision of assistance in an ambulance that can save the patient, - said Elliot Hout (in the press release Hold the Phone: An Ambulance Might Lower Your Chances of Surviving Some Injuries – VM). Therefore, the most important thing here is the speed of delivery to the hospital.
