Diclofenac can increase the risk of fatal diseases by 50 percent, according to a study by Danish scientists on the website of the British Medical Journal (Schmidt et al., Diclofenac use and cardiovascular risks: series of nationwide cohort studies).

The researchers' work covered 6.3 million Danish residents aged 46 to 49 years.

Patients were divided into three groups, depending on the risk of heart disease: low, medium and high. During the study, experts found a close connection between the use of diclofenac and various cardiovascular problems, in particular, arrhythmia, ischemic stroke, heart failure and heart attack.

At the same time, such complications were observed already in the thirty-day period of drug use. A negative effect was also noticed in those who took reduced doses of the drug.

The researchers also compared the incidence of heart disease in patients taking diclofenac and other painkillers. As a result, it turned out that the Danes who took diclofenac experienced on average one more heart attack than those who used ibuprofen or naproxen. In addition, patients who used diclofenac for pain relief were three times more likely to suffer from heart disease than those who used paracetamol.

Diclofenac is an analgesic included in A list of vital and essential medicines for medical use. In Russia, this medicine is sold without a doctor's prescription.
