The unexpected benefits of soda

Diet soda was called useful for some forms of cancer

Sweet carbonated drinks have far from the best reputation. However, a new study conducted by oncologists from Yale University brings positive notes to it. In an article published in the journal PLOS One, scientists conclude that the active use of diet soda with artificial sweeteners significantly reduces mortality from rectal cancer recurrence.

Among the troubles that frighten consumers of sweet diet sodas, diabetes and obesity often appear, although there is no strict evidence of this yet. On the other hand, such drinks are quite definitely associated with the development of a number of metabolic disorders, including those leading to a greater risk of cancer. However, their influence is far from being exhausted by this, which was confirmed by the work of Charles Fuchs and his colleagues.

For seven years, the authors tracked the condition of about 1,000 patients who underwent chemotherapy for the treatment of severe rectal adenocarcinoma. It was found that in patients who consumed at least 12 ounces (350 ml) of sugary diet drinks daily, the risk of sudden death from tumor recurrence was reduced by a very impressive 46 percent.

Scientists have shown that by itself, the transition from conventional, sugar-containing sodas to dietary ones reduces the mortality of such patients by 23 percent. It is still difficult to say what the remaining 23 percent of the decline is related to. Perhaps it's just that people who don't drink sugar drinks are more attentive to their diet and health.
